So here I am reading the Bible and in John 2, I read again the story of the miracle of Jesus turning water into wine.
Now I have read this story countless times in the past but today I got a new…for lack of another word, let me call it a “revelation”.
My revelation is not about the fact that weddings are so important that the “first” miracle had to be performed there. It is also not about the fact that the wine that Jesus miraculous provided tasted better than the one that finished, as testified by the master of the feast as recorded in John 2:10“And he said to him, “Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!”” NKJV
As a matter of fact, I will try not to talk about the truth that Mary the mother of Jesus taught the men at the wedding to obey Jesus completely and without question.
My insight is from the fact that:
1. Mary KNEW that he would not ignore the information she had given him when she said “they have no wine”. The Bible records in John 2:4: “Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come.” Jesus literally said NO to his mother and she went ahead to tell the people to do whatever he asks of them. This means she KNEW that he would do something about this information. She knew that he would not walk away from an opportunity to show kindness, love or empathy.
2. Despite the fact that this was Jesus’s first miracle as we are told in the Bible. His mother KNEW that Jesus COULD do something about the wine situation and I don’t think she expected him to give the people money to buy more wine.
His mother must have noticed something. Before he had his disciples and had started his ministry, his mama must have seen something that made her so sure that he could perform the miraculous. She saw things that the rest of the world had not noticed. Plus of course there is the part about her pondering on what God and the wise men told her about Jesus when he was a baby as seen in Luke 2:19“But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart.”
The message Bible said “Mary kept all these things to herself, holding them dear, deep within herself”.
Mary the mother of Jesus knew.
From points one and two Mary knew that Jesus was both willing and able to help the wine situation at the wedding in Canaan of Galilee.
I know I said that I was going to try not to talk about the fact that Mary taught the people to obey Jesus completely but this kinda goes with my whole “Mary knowing Jesus” theme, so let me just say this.
3. Mary knew that Jesus would not be able to help the ‘wine situation’ if the people did not have enough faith in him to do what he said. The Bible records that Jesus could not perform miracles in Nazareth. This is because they did not believe in him. They were offended at him because they thought they knew him.
Imagine how it would have been at the wedding in Galilee if Jesus asked them to fill pots with water and serve the master of the feast and the people said no. If the people had not been prepped by Mary and instructed to do whatever Jesus told them, they would very likely have doubted him and refused his miraculous instruction. This would have made the miracle impossible and been a not-so-great start to Jesus’ ministry. And guess what? Mary knew this too. Please read Matthew 13: 53-58
Need I say more?
In conclusion, Mary turned out to be a great mama choice for Jesus. She helped to kick start his ministry by listening and keeping all that was told her about her.
